Job Description
General Purpose of Job:
Responsible for the efficient and effective processing of patients through the clerical and clinical areas of the practice/clinic. Under the general direction of the physician or advanced practice provider, provides high quality, compassionate patient care.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Prepares patient for examination. Obtains vital signs and chief complaint. Appropriately documents information obtained.
- Performs laboratory and diagnostic testing.
- Answers, screens and triages telephone calls. Takes accurate messages and distributes to the appropriate personnel within the guidelines of the practice.
- Schedules tests and referral appointments for patients.
- Administers oral and injectable medication. Phones prescriptions to pharmacies.
- Engages and helps promote patient/family teaching as appropriate; and provides an educational environment for patients and patient families.
- Works gaps in care registries to help improve the quality of care.
- Maintains all logs and required checks (i.e., refrigerator temps, medications, oxygen, etc.)
- Maintains practice standards by participating in in-services, committees, etc. May assist in developing and implementing quality control and practice policies.
- Inventories, orders and restocks areas as necessary.
- Maintains and cleans equipment and environmental safety as required.
- Ability to provide clerical services and clinical services as required to maintain an effective practice flow. Cross trained to work both clerically and clinically.

Work Experience | Specialty clinics may require six months specialty experience Relevant clinical experience within the past 5 years; if no clinical experience, completion of medical assistant program in past two years. Previous work experience in medical office setting preferred Experience with an EMR preferred |
Education | High school diploma or GED Completion of an accredited medical assistant program, including an externship OR a minimum of 5 years of Sparrow medical assistant experience in a clinical capacity |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills | Ability to provide care for patients, which is age specific to their physical and safety needs, psychosocial concerns and educational level. Necessary visual and auditory acuity required to monitor patient's condition and operate department equipment Demonstrates a positive team attitude and has interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with clients, their families, providers and co-workers. Ability to work in an EMR environment |

Job Description
General Purpose of Job:
To support the providers in the clinical setting in patient care through direct contact with patients and/or their caregivers. Accurately and clearly document patient interactions. Work in a safe manner consistent with safety policies. To promote the Sparrow Medical Group Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Clinic to the greater Lansing area and provide support as needed.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Work in a collaborative manner with Orthopedic Surgeons, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners to support the SMG Orthopedics and Sports Medicine practices.
- Work collaboratively with the providers to support the needs of the patient prior to and after surgery or an injury.
- Instruct the patient, family, and support caregivers on the exercise program developed for each individual patient.
- Apply splints and casts as directed by the providers. Fit patients for braces and instruct in their use.
- Instruct support caregivers in assisting with the overall care of the patient.
- Orders patient supplies utilized in the care of the patient in conjunction with the practice manager.
- Support the clinical team in various patient coordination duties such as rooming patients, appointment scheduling, medication authorizations, referral coordination, results notifications, and other tasks as necessary.
- The person in this position may be required to work at varying SMG Orthopedics sites to support our orthopedic providers.
Job Requirements
General Requirements | Certification in Athletic Training from the National Athletic Trainers Association. Licensed Athletic Trainer in the State of Michigan. |
Work Experience | Experience in Athletic Department or in an Orthopedic office preferred. |
Education | Graduate of a program accredited by Secretary of the Department of Education and/or Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation recognized agency with a BS degree in Athletic Training or Physical Education/Health. |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills | Effective written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Ability to perform multiple tasks and adapt to changing work situations. Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the athletes services in his /her assigned service area as related to the principle duties and responsibilities of the position. The skills and knowledge needed to proved such are may be gained through education, training and experience. Knowledge of Electronic Medical Record preferred |
