BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Typical grounds maintenance duties to include but not limited to: mowing, trimming, edging, path maintenance, weeding, raking, pest control, facility maintenance, landscape installation, watering, pruning, firewood production, snow/ice removal, and other seasonal grounds maintenance tasks.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
•Operate vehicles and powered equipment including mowers, tractors, bucket loaders, twin-axle vehicles, snowplow, chainsaws, trimmers, edgers, pole saws, snow blower, aerators, and bucket loaders.
•Cultivate, plant, transplant, seed, water, stake, prune, dead-head, weed, rake, edge, mulch, harvest and attend to landscapes, small trees, groundcovers, shrubs, pathways, annual/perennial beds.
•Haul garden debris, clear brush, and remove litter.
•Use hand tools such as shovels, pruners, rakes, forks, hoes, wheelbarrows, sprayers, hoses, and other garden tools to prepare and maintain landscaping.
•Maintain or repair tools, equipment, or structures such as buildings, greenhouses, fences, or benches using hand or power tools.
•Inspect and take corrective action for plant diseases, pests, and wildlife damage.
•Work with staff to maintain the integrity of assigned landscape areas.
•Inspect, clean, and maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
•Learn and maintain a basic level of horticultural and plant knowledge.
•Work with staff to maintain the integrity of assigned landscape areas.
•Maintain assigned grounds equipment in good working order and maintain inventories.
•Assist the Grounds Foreman in the instillation of lawn and landscape projects.
•Analyze and make recommendations concerning grounds methods, equipment and plantings.
•Work with other garden, grounds, greenhouse, and flower shop professionals as assigned
•Adhere to all safety rules and regulations.
•Support other departments in the completion of grounds related tasks.
•Coordinate use, maintenance, and repair of all grounds vehicles and equipment with Grounds Foreman and other grounds staff.
•Perform weekly utility cart and biweekly vehicle maintenance checks
•Interact with fellow staff and guests in a professional, courteous method.
•Contribute to maintaining staff morale positively and exemplify a cooperative attitude.
•Operate vehicles safely while driving and/or parking in compliance with Mohonk Mountain House Traffic Rules and Regulations.
•Work productively and efficiently with or without supervision when performing routine tasks.
•Adhere to Mohonk Mountain House’s Dress and Grooming Standards; presenting a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance and maintaining a positive, professional image to our customers.
•Learn and successfully demonstrate the Mohonk Mountain House Service Steps with Service Strategies with guests and staff.
•Learn and retain knowledge of historical facts and information about Mohonk Mountain House.
•Adhere to Mohonk Mountain House policies and procedures.
•Act calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
•Analyze problems and develop and implement action plans to address problems.
•Insure safety of guests, employees and self, anywhere on the property.
•Inspect the work of others by touch, sight, sound and smell for conformance to prescribed standards of cleanliness.
•Speak, read and write the English language and communicate in a clear and congenial manner, with our guests, visitors and employees. Hear verbal instructions, directions and warnings.
•Reach with hands and arms, bend, kneel, stoop, twist and flex arms, walk up and down stairs/inclines, sit, climb up/down ladders or stand for up to 5 hours at a time.
•Lift up to 100 pounds from ground level to 36 inches with/ without assistance, lift 30 pounds from ground level to overhead, carry a distance of up to 75 feet with or without assistance. Walk up to 7 miles per day.
•Maneuver carts or dollies safely with loads up to 200 pounds up and down stairs, elevators, through passageways or outdoors up to 75 feet.
•See close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
•Work outdoors and expose self to natural elements including rain, heat, wind, weather extremes, pollen, and insects.
•Wear Proper Protective Equipment when performing tasks that recommend such equipment.
•Pay close attention to details.
•Maintain order on job site and within the vehicle shed and other grounds storage areas.
•Maintain a flexible work schedule including days/nights, weekdays/weekends, holidays, and during peak periods of business.
•Interact with fellow staff and guests in a professional, courteous method.
QUALIFICATIONS:
•Valid Driver’s License and at least 21 years of age, or 20 years of age with at least two years of licensed driving experience.
•Previous landscaping experience preferred.

Supervising Groundsman
The work involves responsibility for the general maintenance and upkeep of all grounds and grounds equipment of the College. Work is carried out under general supervision with leeway for independent judgement in the planning and scheduling grounds and equipment maintenance. Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Plans, schedules, supervises and participates in grounds maintenance including, but not limited to, mowing, reseeding, fertilizing, spraying, watering, pruning, planting and the removal of debris with hand and power equipment;
- Schedules, supervises and participates in maintenance of sidewalks, parking lots and storm drains;
- Schedules, supervises and participates in layout and maintenance of gardens and athletic fields;
- Schedules, supervises and participates in snow removal and sanding of lots, sidewalks and roof areas;
- Compiles information for bids, requisitions, stores and maintains inventory;
- Instructs and supervises subordinates in the safe operation and maintenance of power and hand equipment;
- Schedules, supervises and participates in the maintenance and repair of all power and hand equipment;
- Schedules, supervises and participates in the maintenance and repair of garage and workshop;
- Schedules, supervises and participates in the daily removal of all waste from campus buildings and grounds for disposal at landfill;
- Operates a variety of tools and ground equipment, including, but not limited to, backhoes, tractors, mechanical post hold diggers, leveling instruments, chain saws, etc.;
- Completes reports as required.
Other: Full-time, 12 months, Civil Service Competitive Provisional Appointment. Civil Service Examination is a requirement for permanent appointment. Examination to be announced at later date.
Monday - Friday, 7:00AM - 3:00PM, (40 hours per week - one hour paid lunch). Hours will vary during peak periods.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
(A) An Associate's Degree in Landscape Development, Recreation and Sports Area Management or related field and one (1) year of supervisory experience involving all aspects of grounds and grounds equipment maintenance; OR
(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of paid work experience involving all aspects of grounds and grounds equipment maintenance, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR
(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain within one (1) year of appointment, and maintain, appropriate pesticide, insecticide and herbicide applicator's certification.
Must obtain with one (1) year of appointment and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License with a "B" classification (CDL-B)
Preferred Skills, Abilities and Characteristics:
Good knowledge of grounds maintenance operations and upkeep practices; good knowledge of planting, cultivating, pruning, and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs and lawns; good knowledge of the symptoms and means of combatting insects and other pests typical of the area; good knowledge of the operation of machinery and tools used in groundskeeping; good knowledge in the maintenance of groundskeeping machinery, equipment and tools; working knowledge of snow removal and related equipment, including maintenance of ploughs, tractors, blowers and salters; working knowledge of welding, mechanical fabrication and repair of equipment including small engines; working knowledge of construction methods; ability to read blueprints; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to perform routine arduous manual work; ability to follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
