Position Description:
A Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field is required. Successful candidates will have the potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching and research, and should be committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community. Teaching responsibilities will be primarily in introductory chemistry courses and labs, with additional teaching responsibilities depending on the successful candidate's area(s) of expertise and departmental need. This position involves teaching, on average, two courses in each of three trimesters. It is expected that the successful hire will establish and maintain a research program that involves undergraduate students.
About the Department of Chemistry:
The Department of Chemistry comprises thirteen permanent faculty members with support from an administrative assistant and a laboratory specialist. One faculty member also serves as the Department’s dedicated instrumentation specialist. Annually, about 20 students graduate with a degree in chemistry or biochemistry, and about 40% of the students on campus take introductory chemistry courses during their time at Union. Our department has a strong collegial culture. We frequently collaborate to develop innovative approaches to undergraduate education in both teaching and scholarship. We have offices and research spaces in several connected science and engineering buildings, and maintain an exceptional suite of advanced instrumentation in support of research and teaching.

Compensation:
The annual salary range for this position is $68,500-$70,000. Except for roles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

The Senior Instructional Technologist will be a member of the Production team in the Instructional Design and Development (IDD) unit at Excelsior University. Our team works closely with the IDD project teams to develop transformative, engaging, high-quality learning experiences for our students. As a Senior Instructional Technologist, you will partner with IDD team members to build and revise content in the learning management system (LMS).
This is a full-time hybrid role with a minimum of two required days at Excelsior's home office of 7 Columbia Circle, Albany, NY with the remainder of the week worked from home.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned.
- Develop or revise learning content in the LMS in alignment with IDD’s course design, guidelines, and best practices.
- Implement repairs to live courses, as needed.
- Evaluate features and tools available within the LMS to determine their deployment and implementation within our programs and other learning experiences.
- Research and evaluate emerging technologies to identify new strategic investments in instructional technology to support student success.
- Contribute to the development of efficient processes and the data-gathering to assess impact, usage, and effectiveness of our instructional technologies.
- Manage Production team’s documentation (e.g., templates, best practices, guides).
- Ensure Production team personnel are cross-trained and working in a consistent manner.
- Work with the LMS administrator and application specialists to integrate technologies within the LMS.
- Consult with other team members during the course development process to identify, test, evaluate, and select technologies that support student learning and the achievement of learning outcomes.
- Provide technical support for faculty and students in the utilization of adopted instructional technologies.
- Research, select, and modify existing training curriculum, content, materials on instructional technologies for faculty, students, and other team members.
- Assist with new faculty onboarding and orientation.
- Collaborate with team members and other Academic Affairs departments to create and facilitate faculty development programs and on-demand resources on teaching, learning, and course design.
- Explore new course design strategies and learning technologies to create student-centered learning experiences.
- Collaborate with IT to streamline communication and processes related to academic technology.
- Remain current with the latest industry technology tools and trends.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications (Required)

- Bachelor's degree in instructional technology or a related field of study and at least three years of work experience required. At least five years of work experience preferred.
- Strong relationship-building skills.

- Ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies and adapt to an evolving field.
- Familiarity with universal design for learning (UDL) and accessible technology guidelines, such as WCAG 2.1.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively manage projects that involve diverse individuals who may be local or at a distance.
- Technical skills appropriate for an instructional technologist position (e.g., learning management systems, designing for web, authoring tools, basic HTML, Microsoft Office) and willingness to continually learn new applications.
- Ability to troubleshoot technology issues.
- Documented expertise with learning management systems; Canvas is highly preferred.
- Ability to interpret faculty needs in course maintenance and instructional design.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
- Ability to adapt to change and learn new procedures.
- Ability to think critically, innovate, and problem-solve.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
Qualifications (Preferred)
- Experience creating and using immersive virtual learning environments (e.g., VR, AR, gamification).
- Knowledge of mobile course design.
- Comprehensive knowledge of active learning and inclusive pedagogies.
- Relevant experience in higher education.
The hiring salary range for this position is $65,000.00 - $71,000.00. The hiring salary range above represents the University's good faith estimate at the time of posting.
