Job Summary

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is seeking qualified candidates for Operating Mechanic and / or Senior Operating Mechanic positions within our steam plant operations.

These positions perform maintenance and repairs on steam boilers and steam plant auxiliaries, working in a rotation to operate two central steam plants. Both levels provide maintenance and repair response coverage on evening, night, and weekend shifts for all campus facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Operating Mechanic

• High school diploma or equivalent

• One (1) year of experience maintaining commercial or industrial mechanical equipment preferred

• Valid U.S. driver’s license

Senior Operating Mechanic

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Five (5) years of experience maintaining and operating a steam plant or comparable industrial facility

• Valid U.S. driver’s license

Applicants must meet the stated minimum education and experience requirements for the level they wish to be considered.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

For Both Levels:

• Working knowledge of stem cycle, plumbing, piping, mechanical repairs, electrical work, and general construction

• Ability to interpret technical drawings and documentation

• Strong communication and customer service skills

• Flexibility in dealing with emergency situations

• Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Windows

• Constant attention to safety for self, co-workers, and others

In addition, Senior Operating Mechanic candidates must demonstrate:

• Thorough knowledge of steam plant operations, boiler systems, and associated chemicals

• Ability to independently operate, troubleshoot, and maintain complex plant systems

• Experience planning and scheduling maintenance activities

• Ability to assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor or lead mechanic

Job Duties

Operating Mechanic:

• Monitor steam plant operations for safe, reliable, and efficient performance as instructed

• Start/stop boilers and auxiliary equipment and switch boiler fuels when instructed

• Maintain and update operational logs and reports

• Receive oil deliveries in accordance with Institute policies and applicable regulations

• Conduct water tests and adjust chemical feed rates as directed

• Perform routine and emergency maintenance on mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation components

• Assist with annual high-pressure boiler shutdowns and maintenance inspections

• Monitor and maintain chemical inventories, move chemicals and salt as needed

• Check and service satellite steam boilers and closed loop systems across campus

• Perform other duties as assigned

Senior Operating Mechanic (includes all duties above, plus):

• Independently start, stop, and troubleshoot boilers and auxiliary systems without supervision

• Identify maintenance needs and work with supervisor to plan and schedule repairs

• Conduct and interpret water tests, adjusting chemical systems proactively

• Provide quality control oversight during annual high-pressure boiler shutdowns

• Order supplies and materials for approval by the Lead Operating Mechanic or Supervisor

• Assume lead responsibilities when Supervisor or Lead Operating Mechanic is unavailable

Shift

Non-Standard Shift: This position involves scheduled shift assignments on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts.

The 3rd shift is typically scheduled only during the winter months, generally from December through late March, depending on weather conditions and the onset of freezing temperatures. The role supports the operation of two central steam plants and provides maintenance and repair response coverage for all campus facilities.

Starting Salary/Rate

Expected hiring range:

• Operating Mechanic: $26.00 - $28.50 per hour
• Sr. Operating Mechanic: $29.00 - 30.00 per hour

Job Summary

The Fleet Mechanic performs complex maintenance and repairs on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s fleet of cars, trucks and all internal combustion engines and related equipment. The Fleet Mechanic provides on-call support for after-hour emergency response as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Five years’ experience in auto mechanics or related fields
• NYS Inspectors License required or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
• Valid U.S. Driver’s License

Relevant combinations of education, training and experience may be considered.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic functions
• Requires basic computer skills including Microsoft and job specific software
• In-depth knowledge of auto and diesel mechanics, internal combustion engines, heating and air conditioning systems and tire maintenance
• Flexibility in dealing with emergency situations

Job Duties

• Assess and identify extent of damage or malfunction to all fleet vehicles and equipment. Inform Management to determine whether repairs can be completed in-house or outsourced to appropriate vendor. Interview vendors for a variety of automotive parts and equipment and obtain quotes. Arranges for service and ensures repairs are performed per contract. Essential
• Schedule, conduct and perform regular preventative maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment. Prepare and convert all vehicles and equipment to proper operating conditions and modes for all seasons. Essential
• New York State Licensed Mechanic to perform New York State highway motor vehicle state inspections on an annual basis and maintain proper record keeping. Essential
• Process repair requests as needed utilizing department Standard Operating Procedures to ensure compliance with New York State vehicular regulations. Perform needed repairs to fleet vehicles and equipment in a cost effective, timely manner. Keep staff and management informed of repair timeline. Essential
• Update non-lease vehicle and equipment purchase history database for the Division of Administration Fleet. Keep manuals and record of services performed on each vehicle or equipment. Essential
• Respond to emergency calls to fleet vehicles or equipment at various campus or off-campus locations. Perform emergency repairs as needed. Inform Management of all exceptions to daily operations on a timely basis. Essential
• Track and maintain inventory of parts; order and receive parts and pick-up or deliver parts. Maintain equipment, supplies and work area in a neat and orderly condition; return equipment, tools and materials to the proper storage area. Comply with safety rules and regulations for personal protection and safety of other employees. RPI Fleet tool to be returned to assigned areas daily. Essential
• Perform snow removal functions in accordance with the Institute snow removal plan. Respond to and be available for weather related emergencies as necessary to maintain safe transportation through campus. Ensure availability for night and weekend call-in for snow removal operations. Operate, maintain and inspect all snow removal equipment in accordance with Institute’s standards. Ensure snow equipment readiness for next storm. Essential
• Monitor fuel dispensing system, report the need for fuel based on levels reported to Management daily. Inspect and document above ground fuel tanks on a monthly basis. Essential
