Job Type:    Full or Part Time (afternoons and evenings):  if Full Time-benefits available

State:           Michigan

Job Details:  Mid-West Family is looking to hire a Multi-Media Journalist to cover local news as well as business and sports related stories in southwest Michigan.  This role requires flexible hours, some days and events will warrant more hours than others.  This is especially true for the afternoon/evening reporter position which is responsible for covering most of the after-hours’ events and ensure that comprehensive news product is updated timely. 

The person in this role performs interviews, attends meetings, and gathers audio, visual/video content for use in new stories shared across our platforms.  This person will also anchor newscasts during their scheduled shift, depending on the shift. 

Experience:   Prefer reporting experience and/or broadcast school certificate or college degree in journalism or media.

                       Require:  Superior relationships skills, excellent listening skills, computer skills, ability to work alone as well as in a team setting, digital and social acumen required, ability to drive for work, and ability to work remotely without direct oversight.

Requirements:     Keep track of their meeting coverage schedule including Benton Harbor City

Commission, St. Joseph City Commission, Benton Harbor area schools, St. Joseph Public Schools, Lake Michigan College, Berrien County Board of Commissioners, and South Haven City Council.

The ability to keep track of ongoing court cases and to check with the courthouse each week to obtain a copy of the next week’s docket.

 Flexibility to cover meetings or evening events beyond their ‘regular beat’ from time to time.

Able to handle the pressure of working under a strict deadline and the stress that comes with that.

Contribute to the daily planner with story ideas.

Knowledge of digital editing software, digital automation systems and news gathering platforms.

The ability to update content on our websites and platforms.

Video editing skills.

Ability to anchor newscasts during their shift and responsible for recording a ‘wrap’ or ‘voicer’ to be used during the newscasts in the next news cycle.

Maximize prep time to accurately present the news in our many platforms.

Ability to work with a wide variety of personalities in an effective and courteous manner.

Strong oral communication skills.  Ability to take complex ideas and issues and relate them in conversational terms.

Strong written communication skills.  Strong grammar, spelling and vocabulary skills are necessary.

Valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to perform work duties.

Well-groomed and dress professionally.

Other duties as assigned.

Compensation:  $15 per hour
