The Machinist / Welder is responsible for machining and welding to support production needs. The Machinist / Welder performs setup, calibration, maintenance and operation of machining equipment, including computer numerically controlled equipment, to make complex precise cuts, bends, alignments and forms of requisite materials. The Machinist / Welder also performs the most exacting, precise, and difficult reproduction, experimental, and development welding on torch brazing of dissimilar metals, thin gauge to thicker metal, where the rod and material to be welded have very close melting points. Welds aerospace materials in accordance with established technical data acceptable to the FAA. Requires specialized training, certification, and experience in a variety of welding techniques such as nickel and cobalt alloys, and titanium. Requires the ability to set up, lay out, and analyze problems and their solutions by welding processes. Shop mathematics is needed. Knowledge of metals and their characteristics is also necessary. As customers are on site at the facilities, professional appearance and communication skills are required in order to create a positive and lasting professional relationship.
• Performs setup, calibration, maintenance, programming and operation on a variety of machining equipment including lathes, brakes, shears, grinders, drill presses, milling machines, computer numerically controlled and hydraulic presses to assemble and/or fabricate parts and complex assemblies.
• Reads and interprets specification manuals, blueprints, templates and layouts to determine machining operation to be performed.
• Computes dimensions and tolerances and measures and lays out work pieces.
• Verifies dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, gauges and micrometers. Troubleshoots, debugs and modifies to achieve expected performance.
• Plans sequence of operations to weld parts and assemblies where difficulty of access requires that welding be performed in the proper order so that each successive step may be accomplished to quality standards. Selects method of welding, welding rod based upon a knowledge of welding and brazing processes, the expansion, contraction, and melting point of metals, and welds or rework units. Welds aerospace materials in accordance with established technical data acceptable to the FAA.
• Torch brazes small couplings and assemblies that have been machined of threaded and very thin gauge material to heavier material where the melting point of the rod is very near the melting point of the thin material.
• Maintains valid MIL Spec. certification(s) as required by StandardAero in accordance with approved maintenance modification plans and established maintenance manual procedures.
• Documents all work accomplished (a.k.a. sign-off) in a clear, concise and accurate manner. Advises the Quality Leader when changes to the Quality System and associated documentation are required.
• Performs setup, calibration, maintenance and operation of machining equipment, including computer numerically controlled equipment, to make complex precise cuts, bends, alignments and forms of requisite materials.
• Works fair share of overtime and travels to customer locations or other StandardAero facilities as required.
• Responsible for knowing, understanding, following, promoting and continuously improving company policies and procedures. Complies with all applicable Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), Quality Procedures (QPs) and Local Work Instructions.
• Interacts with OEM Engineering Departments and Propulsion Engineer to review, adjust and finalize procedures as appropriate.
• Observes all safety, environmental and general housekeeping rules and policies.
• May perform other duties as required by the department.
Must be authorized to work in the US.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of a machinist apprenticeship program or trade certification; or equivalent experience.
• Three years’ experience in a machine shop operations (mills, lathes) desired.
• Maintains valid AWS- D17.1 certification(s).
• High degree of mechanical aptitude, accuracy and precision.
• Thorough knowledge of manufacturing, tool design, fabrication methods and processes, metallurgy and heat treating.
• Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments and hand tools.
• Ability to read, understand and interpret blueprints.
• Strong mathematical skills.
